๐Ÿ†• Latest Update — V3.3.1

This update focuses on making the addon easier to configure and better for addon packs.

The biggest improvements are:

  • Added Main Hand Light as its own personal setting
  • Added Dynamic Light Range
  • Custom Light Sources can now be added directly from your inventory
  • Custom Light Sources now support light levels from 1 to 15
  • Custom Light Sources can now be enabled separately for:
    • Main Hand
    • Offhand
    • Dropped Item
  • Added better Custom Light Source editing
  • Added personal reset option
  • Added world reset option
  • Performance Presets now also adjust the dynamic light range
  • Improved UI text and status colors
  • Improved menu readability
  • Continued item lore cleanup and duplication prevention

This makes the addon easier to use if you play with other addons that add custom lamps, crystals, torches or special light items.

๐Ÿ‘ค Personal Settings

Personal Settings only affect the player who changes them.

This is useful in multiplayer because one player can disable their own dynamic light or item information without changing the entire world.

Personal settings include:

  • My Dynamic Light
  • Main Hand Light
  • Offhand Light
  • Helmet Light
  • Preferred Light Source
  • Offhand Activation Method
  • Offhand Torch Placement
  • Offhand Place Light Blocks
  • Item Information
  • Reset My Settings

So if one player wants full item information and another player wants a cleaner inventory, both can use their own preference.

โœ‹ Main Hand and Offhand Light

In this version, Main Hand Light has its own setting.

This means you can control main-hand lighting separately from offhand lighting.

For example:

  • You can keep main-hand light enabled and disable offhand light
  • You can use only offhand light
  • You can disable your own personal dynamic light completely
  • You can still let other players use their own settings

This makes the addon more flexible, especially in multiplayer worlds.

๐ŸŒ World Settings

World Settings affect the entire world.

Only the host or operators can edit them.

World settings include:

  • Enable Dynamic Light
  • Dropped Item Lights
  • Maximum Dropped Item Lights
  • Entity Lighting
  • Dimension Settings
  • Dynamic Light Range
  • Performance Presets
  • Custom Light Sources
  • Reset World Settings

Normal players can still open the menu and read the settings, but they cannot change global options without permission.

๐Ÿ“ Dynamic Light Range

V3.3.1 adds a Dynamic Light Range option.

This controls how far from players the addon processes dropped item lights and entity lights.

Available options:

  • Short — 24 blocks
  • Medium — 48 blocks
  • High — 64 blocks
  • Very High — 96 blocks

Lower range is better for performance.

Higher range gives more visual coverage, but it can cost more performance in busy worlds.

๐Ÿš€ Performance Presets

Performance Presets make it easier to choose a good setup without changing every option manually.

Performance

Best for Realms, mobile devices, or worlds where performance matters more.

  • Dynamic Light Range: 24 blocks
  • Dropped item lights enabled
  • Maximum dropped lights: 10
  • Entity lighting: Natural glowing mobs only

Balanced

Recommended for most players.

  • Dynamic Light Range: 48 blocks
  • Dropped item lights enabled
  • Maximum dropped lights: 25
  • Entity lighting: All supported entities

Quality

Best if you want more visible lighting and your world/device can handle it.

  • Dynamic Light Range: 96 blocks
  • Dropped item lights enabled
  • Maximum dropped lights: 50
  • Entity lighting: All supported entities

If your settings do not match one of these profiles, the menu shows the profile as Custom.

๐Ÿงฉ Custom Light Sources

Custom Light Sources are one of the best options for addon compatibility.

Operators can add item IDs from other addons and give them a light level.

In V3.3.1, custom lights are easier to add because you can select custom items directly from your inventory.

Vanilla items and already registered sources are hidden from the inventory list, so it is easier to find only the custom items you can add.

Custom light options

Each custom light source can have:

  • Light level from 1 to 15
  • Main Hand Light enabled or disabled
  • Offhand Light enabled or disabled
  • Dropped Item Light enabled or disabled

This means a custom item can work only in your hand, only when dropped, or in all supported places depending on how the operator configures it.

You can register up to 24 custom light sources.

Example item ID format:

myaddon:crystal_lamp

Vanilla minecraft: items are already managed by the addon, so this menu is mainly for items from other addons.

โœ‹ Offhand Dynamic Lighting

You can move supported light items to your offhand without manually placing them in the slot.

Hold a supported light source in your main hand and look toward empty air.

Then use the item:

  • PC: Right-click
  • Mobile: Press and hold the screen
  • Console: Use the normal interact/use button

The offhand must be empty.

Looking at empty air is important, because it helps avoid placing the block by mistake.

๐Ÿงฑ Place Lights From the Offhand

Some supported light blocks can be placed directly from the offhand.

When the option is enabled, use:

Sneak + Hit

You can choose between:

  • Torches Only
  • Torches and Lanterns
  • All Placeable Lights

Not every light item is placeable. Some items only produce dynamic light and do not have a block version.

๐Ÿ’ก Supported Light Items

System Dynamic Lights supports many vanilla light items.

Examples include:

  • Torch
  • Soul Torch
  • Redstone Torch
  • Lantern
  • Soul Lantern
  • Campfire
  • Soul Campfire
  • Candle
  • Glowstone
  • Shroomlight
  • Sea Lantern
  • Sea Pickle
  • Lava Bucket
  • Beacon
  • Conduit
  • Brewing Stand
  • Redstone Dust
  • Redstone Repeater
  • Redstone Comparator
  • Totem of Undying
  • Nether Star
  • Glowstone Dust
  • Blaze Rod
  • Blaze Powder
  • Glow Ink Sac
  • Fire Charge
  • And more supported light items

The addon uses controlled item IDs, so it avoids wrong matches with unrelated items.

๐Ÿ“œ Item Information / Lore

Supported items can show extra information in their description.

Depending on your settings, the item lore can show:

  • System Dynamic Lights marker
  • Light Level
  • Whether the item works underwater
  • Whether it can be moved to the offhand
  • Whether it can be placed from the offhand

You can choose:

  • Disabled
  • Light Level Only
  • Full Information

The latest versions also improved lore cleanup and fixed problems where the addon information could be duplicated.

โš™๏ธ Configuration Book

The addon includes the System Dynamic Light Config book.

The menu shows clear status text and better colors, so it is easier to see what is enabled or disabled.

The main menu includes:

  • Personal Settings
  • World Settings
  • Performance Presets
  • Custom Light Sources
  • Information
  • Close

The Information section explains each setting inside the game.

๐ŸŽฏ Light Source Priority

If you have more than one light source at the same time, the addon can decide which one should be used.

For example:

  • Helmet
  • Offhand item
  • Main-hand item

Available priority modes:

  • Brightest Available
  • Original Priority
  • Prefer Helmet
  • Prefer Offhand
  • Prefer Main Hand

If your preferred source is not available, the addon can use the brightest remaining light source.

๐Ÿ’จ Dropped Item Lighting

Supported light items can illuminate the area after being dropped on the ground.

For example, dropping a torch or lava bucket can create light where it lands.

You can limit how many dropped item lights are processed per dimension:

  • 10 Lights
  • 25 Lights
  • 50 Lights
  • Unlimited

Using a lower limit is better for performance on Realms or lower-end devices.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Entity Lighting

Entities can also create light depending on the selected setting.

Available modes:

  • Disabled
  • Burning Entities Only
  • Natural Glowing Mobs Only
  • All Supported Entities

Natural glowing entities include:

  • Blaze
  • Magma Cube
  • Glow Squid
  • Allay
  • Creaking

Burning entities can also produce light when that mode is enabled.

๐ŸŒŠ Underwater Lighting

Some supported items can also illuminate underwater.

The Sea Pickle is supported for underwater lighting.

Extra Content Pack

The optional System Dynamic Extra pack adds extra custom content such as lantern helmets.

This keeps the main dynamic light system cleaner for players who only want vanilla-style item lighting.

Lantern helmets can produce Light Level 15 when Helmet Light is enabled.

They can be repaired and enchanted like normal helmets.

The extra content pack includes lantern helmets for several armor tiers, including Copper, Iron, Chainmail, Gold, Diamond and Netherite.

๐Ÿงฉ Compatibility

System Dynamic Lights is made to work well with other addons.

No player.json

The addon does not use player.json, which helps avoid conflicts with addons that change player animations, textures or behavior.

Action & Stuff

The addon is designed to work alongside Action & Stuff and other addons that modify vanilla items or player visuals.

Custom Addon Items

With Custom Light Sources, operators can add light support for items from other addons.

Realms & Multiplayer

The addon works in multiplayer and Realms.

Personal settings are per player, while world settings are controlled by operators.

No Experimental Gameplay

No experimental gameplay toggles are required.

Achievements

The addon is designed to work without disabling achievements.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Installation

System Dynamic Lights uses two required packs:

  • System Dynamic Light BP/BH — behavior, scripts and mechanics
  • System Dynamic Light RP/RS — textures, models, names and translations

Both are required.

If you also want the optional lantern helmets and extra content, install the separate System Dynamic Extra pack too.
